Swinging for a Cure
Swinging for a Cure Benefit for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
Hosted by Dave Jones
8th Annual Swinging for a Cure
Monday, June 10, 2024
Nakoma Golf Club, Madison, WI
The Short Story:
Swinging for a Cure was created by Dave Jones in 2017 as a fundraiser for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. As hosts, Dave Jones covers all costs of this event so that every dollar raised in sponsorships, golfer registrations, and auctions will go directly to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Held annually at the Nakoma Golf Club in Madison, WI, the fundraiser has raised over 1.3 million dollars!
About the Event:
This fundraising event includes a day of golf at two competition levels; 4-Player Casual Scramble, and 2-Player Competitive Scramble that is flighted according to combined handicap. Along with the next best score, the two flight winners will compete in a 3-team championship shootout. The winners will receive a trophy and bragging rights.
The evening program consists of a live and silent auction, as well as a short presentation.
The Long Story:
It’s no secret that Dave Jones, Inc. Co-owner and CEO, Greg Jones’ youngest son Michael was born with cystic fibrosis. Anyone who’s had the pleasure of knowing Greg and his wife, Traci, knows their strength and dedication to finding a cure for cystic fibrosis. Not only for their son, but for anyone else who has been/is/or will be affected by cystic fibrosis.
By all appearances, Michael is your average 6-year old. Shy, funny, sweet, and has an affinity for trucks and tractors. What you don’t see is the frequent cocktail of medicines and twice-daily hour-long sessions with shakey, a vibrating vest that helps break up mucus and allow him to breathe easier. He handles it all with an inspiring grace, and without complaint.
Since Greg Jones became CEO and Co-Owner with his sister, Holly (Jones) Kellesvig, Dave Jones, Inc. has built on the strong set of core values and amazing company culture foundation left by Dave Jones. Here employees are seen as family and work together as a team. A company culture that embodied values such as Community, Family, and Giving Back. So when Greg recognized the absence of a Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) event in Madison and expressed the desire to create a fundraiser, his team jumped at the opportunity to help and support the family.
Dave Jones Inc. held the first Swinging for a Cure event just over five months later. The goal for the first year was to raise $100,000 for CFF. The team soon discovered that they underestimated the support of the community. Sponsorships sold quickly, and golfer registrations filled, exceeding that goal of $100,000 before the event started.
The team set a new goal for the 4th annual event in 2020, needing just $300,000 to reach a 4-year combined total of $1 million in donations. Unfortunately, COVID had other plans. After optimistically rescheduling the event from early June to late August, the team made the tough decision to cancel the golf outing.
Sponsors and supporters recognized the significance of the event and CFF (read more about the 2019 breakthrough drug below), and the majority opted to donate despite the cancellation. Because of their support and a generous donation from DJI, the 2020 event still raised $138,500 for CFF.
What is Cystic Fibrosis:
Cystic fibrosis is a rare, genetic, life-shortening disease that affects every organ in the body and makes breathing difficult. Some people with the disease say it is like breathing through a narrow straw. In people with CF, a defective gene causes a thick buildup of mucus in the lungs, pancreas and other organs. In the lungs, the mucus clogs the airways and traps bacteria, leading to life-threatening lung infections. Sixty years ago, most children did not live long enough to attend elementary school, but thanks to Foundation-based research and care, people with CF’s median survival age is now about 40.
In October 2019, the FDA approved a breakthrough therapy for cystic fibrosis, Trikafta. There are many variations or mutations of cystic fibrosis, and Trikafta has the potential to provide effective therapy for over 90% of patients, some of whom had no previous therapy options. Michael Jones is one of those patients and is eligible to start taking Trikafta in 2021.
