More than a Golf Outing
Swinging for a Cure was established by Dave Jones in 2017 with one goal: to support the fight against cystic fibrosis and help fund research that changes lives.
What makes this event unique is our commitment to maximizing impact. Dave Jones covers the costs of hosting the event, allowing 100% of sponsorships, golfer registrations, auction proceeds, and direct donations to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF).
Since its founding, Swinging for a Cure has raised more than $3 million in support of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and its mission to find a cure for this devastating disease.
Event Highlights
Held annually at Nakoma Golf Club, Swinging for a Cure brings together community members, business leaders, golfers, and supporters for a day dedicated to making a difference.
Golf Tournament
Participants can compete in one of two divisions:
- 4-Player Casual Scramble
- 2-Player Competitive Scramble (flighted by combined handicap)
Flight winners advance to a championship shootout, where teams compete for the tournament title, trophy, and year-long bragging rights.
Evening Program
The day concludes with:
- Live auction
- Silent auction
- Dinner and networking
- Special presentations highlighting the impact of CFF’s work

The Story Behind the Event
Swinging for a Cure was inspired by a deeply personal connection to cystic fibrosis.
Greg Jones, CEO and Co-Owner of Dave Jones, and his wife Traci have firsthand experience with the disease through their son, Michael, who was born with cystic fibrosis.
Michael is much like any other child. He’s kind, funny, and loves trucks and tractors. What many people don’t see are the daily treatments, medications, and therapies required to help him breathe and stay healthy.
As Greg and his family navigated life with cystic fibrosis, they became passionate advocates for advancing research and supporting the CF community. When they recognized there was no major Cystic Fibrosis Foundation fundraising event in Madison, they set out to create one.
Supported by employees, customers, vendors, and community partners, the first Swinging for a Cure event was organized in just a few months.
The original fundraising goal was $100,000.
The community exceeded that goal before the first tournament even began.
Since then, the event has continued to grow, demonstrating the incredible generosity of supporters throughout Wisconsin and beyond.
Understanding Cystic Fibrosis
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a rare, genetic disease that affects the lungs, pancreas, and other organs throughout the body.
The disease causes thick, sticky mucus to build up in the lungs and airways, making it difficult to breathe and increasing the risk of serious infections. Many individuals with CF undergo daily medications and treatments to manage symptoms and maintain their quality of life.
Thanks to decades of research funded by organizations like the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, treatment options have improved dramatically, helping people with CF live longer and healthier lives.
One of the most significant advancements came in 2019 with the FDA approval of Trikafta, a breakthrough therapy that has transformed treatment possibilities for many patients.
